Compression Therapy

Compression therapy is used for a multitude of reasons; including on long flights, during pregnancy, and for many medical reasons such as poor circulation, lipedema, and lymphedema. At Nunn’s we carry a wide array of compression gear and even have certified fitters on hand to help you make an appropriate selection.

Poor circulation. Graduated compression therapy can help manage symptoms such as tired achy legs, swelling, spider veins, varicose veins, skin changes or leg ulcers by aiding your circulation.

Lymphedema. Compression garments are designed to comfortably keep pressure on the swollen or affected area to assist the drainage of fluid and minimize swelling.

Lipedema. Compression stockings can help decrease pain and hypersensitivity, increase mobility and minimize additional issues such as edema.

Benefits of wearing compression stockings

As always, be sure to follow the directions of your doctor for your compression therapy.CustomCompressionFitting

Your doctor may prescribe compression socks to:
  • boost circulation in your legs
  • support veins
  • prevent blood from pooling in your leg veins
  • diminish leg swelling
  • reduce orthostatic hypotension, which causes lightheadedness or unsteadiness when you stand
  • help prevent venous ulcers
  • prevent development of deep vein thrombosis in your legs
  • help lessen the pain caused by varicose veins
  • reverse venous hypertension
  • improve lymphatic drainage

Your doctor may advise that you don’t use them if you have nerve damage in your legs or another condition that affects skin sensation, peripheral arterial disease, a history of a peripheral arterial bypass grafting, a skin infection on your feet or legs, dermatitis with oozing or fragile skin, massive leg swelling, or a pulmonary edema from congestive heart failure. Compression socks are most likely to benefit you if:

  • You've recently had surgery or have been on bed rest—inactivity increases your risk of DVT.
  • aYou're going on a long flight. You'll be inactive and confined to a tight space for many hours, which increases the risk of blood clots. Research has shown that people who wear compression stockings during air travel are less likely to develop DVT or swelling in their legs.
  • You have a clotting disorder that puts you at risk for DVT, or a family history of DVT.
  • You have varicose veins or leg ulcers. Compression socks won't cure these conditions, but they can combat the aching, swelling, and general discomfort that often accompanies them.

How we measure?

Our staff has gone through training and taken classes to become certified as fitters of compression therapy. You can be confident we will fit you to the correct garment. Depending which type of stocking is purchased we may have to measure from the circumference of your ankle to the circumference of your upper thigh.

If getting them prescribed, your doctor should indicate on the prescription which style, length and compression grade is required. Not all compression grades will be covered by all insurances, but Nunn’s offers discounts for bundle purchases. Call today to speak with an associate or come into our showroom!
